How To Correctly Order Books On Amazon

How To Correctly Order Books On Amazon
Sometimes ordering the right book is trickier than you think

Certain Factors Make Ordering Books On Amazon Tricky

Imagine yourself as a first time author trying to order your books on Amazon. You do an Amazon search for your recently posted book and hit enter to look at your search results. The first copy of your book you see is your newly published book listed for $999.99!

Looking a little more closely, you see the seller is another vendor you have never heard of, nor with whom you have any association with.

Living and Learning On Amazon

Believe it, or not, as the author of seven self-published books, this happened to me not once, but a number of times. In fact, the last time it happened, a friend of mine advised me Amazon was listing my book for Deceptions of the Ages for the above asking price.

A few hundred dollars above the asking price!

Is Amazon Deliberately Trying To Kill My Sales?

How To Correctly Order Books On Amazon
Sometimes odd placements on Amazon hurt sales, too.

As we will see, there are a number of factors at work on Amazon which most authors and readers are not aware. The answer to whether or not Amazon is deliberately trying to kill my sales is more complicated than that.

Naturally, anyone seeing their book at a ridiculous amount show up in a search before their own listing is going to be suspicious.

Discovery: The Reader & The Author Are A Victim of the Amazon Marketplace

To begin, I will use my own experience and introduction to self publishing as an example. Then, I will go into detail about the $999.99 listing.

Before Createspace and KDP, there were a number of companies who offered self-publishing services. As I spoke about in my previous post: When Is It Wise To Revise Your Self-Published Book? I went with one of these companies to publish My Year In Oman: An American Experience in Arabia During The War On Terror.

My Year in Oman: An American Experience in Arabia During the War On Terror
My Year in Oman was my first experience in self publishing and Amazon in 2005.

As part of my package, my book was made available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble and a number of other distributors.

Imagine My Shock

Imagine my shock when I was searching on Amazon for my new and first book, only to find it selling for a substantially higher price.

Then, think about my further shock to find the company listing my book was the same company I had paid to publish it!

Deceptions of the Ages is a great example of a book Amazon tries to “bury.”
How To Correctly Order Books On Amazon
In a search, Deceptions of the Ages falls way behind other books with barely similar titles

The $999.99 Edition

A few years ago, fearing the worst, I did a an Amazon search for my book. Naturally, my fears were well-founded when I saw the first result of my search. It was my book, Deceptions of the Ages: “Mormons” Freemasons & Extraterrestrials listed for $999.99.

As I sat there looking at it, I could not believe my eyes. That was the first result Amazon offered in their search. No question about it. Amazon was trying to kill my sales.

Amazon Responds

I made a call to KDP Customer Service and explained the issue. Their solution was that I should purchase the book for $999.99. After I received the book, according to Amazon, I could then make a complaint about the vendor.

Something every reader and author must understand about Amazon is that everyone has the right to buy and resell a product in an attempt to make a profit. Even an author’s book.

Instead of Amazon’s solution, I had a different idea.

Problems Ordering Books From Other Vendors

First and foremost, there are a number of editions of my books. In addition to the cover artwork, the editing, writing and content has improved over time with every new edition and addition of one of my books.

Unfortunately, Amazon does not make more money from selling you a cheaper product. They often will not provide you with a a direct link to one of my books, my merchandise or my movies.

How To Correctly Order Books On Amazon
Even though I sell a lot of books, merchandise and movies, Amazon search don’t love me

What this means for you is that you buy an inferior product and miss out on the total experience of reading one of my books. Or, you will have to do a little work to find a link to my latest update and works.

Two Ways To Verify You Are Getting A Heinessight Original Product

If you are looking for a book, merchandise or movie by Matthew Heines, the best way to begin your journey is right here at Heinessight.com or any of the websites under the Heinessight brand. Here or there, you will find all the verified links you need to give you direct access to the experiences of a lifetime.

Just go to Amazon’s Look Inside The Book feature. There, you will see the latest copyright dates for each of my books.

Don’t forget. Digital versions have copyright pages, too.

The latest copyright date for all of my books but Heinessights: Wisdom For The Ages is going to be 2022 and 2023. Any edition you see prior to that is not the latest version and I hope you will search for the products that will offer the most enjoyable, enlightening reading experience.

Trust But Verify On Amazon

To summarize, when you are buying on Amazon, you are buying in a marketplace where anyone has the right to buy and resell your product. It is certainly not a perfect world, but it does allow talented authors the ability to compete without the resources of a major publisher.

To compete, I am using education and renovation to keep my readers interested in my own original products. I hope that my experiences are not typical. My potential plethora of publications and the length of time I have been publishing and updating, might make my situation unique.

When Is It Wise To Revise Your Self Published Book?

Sometimes Whether Or Not To Revise Your Book Might Not Be Obvious

When it comes to revising a book, there are some reasons for and against it. In this short blog I will explain why it might be beneficial to revise an existing version of your book. I will also explain why revising a current work might be doing the wrong thing for the right reason.

Two Decades of Experience

My Year in Oman
My Year in Oman was my first attempt at publishing. Technology has changed since then.

As much as it ails me to say it, I started writing the first book I actually sent to publishers in 2003. Although the nostalgia might be enough to interest the reader, I think it is as a good a place as any to jump off and talk about why we should consider revising a published work.

Technology Upgrades And Compatibility

The transition of written communication from the cuneiform tablet to papyrus, the printing press, and finally to the digital printing platforms we use today allows us for the first time to revise our manuscript for the first time ever without massive amounts of labor involved.

However, in my first experience the technology that made it so easy to write, edit and publish, also affected my ability to publish a properly formatted transcript.

Arabic to English

My first two books, My Year in Oman: An American Experience in Arabia During The War On Terror and Another Year in Oman Between Iraq and a Hard Place were both written or edited in some way on computers at the college where I worked in the Sultanate of Oman. Because the language of Oman is Arabic and not English, the Word program installed on our computers was meant primarily for Arabic users and was compatible with an Arabic keyboard.

The Gift That Keeps On Giving

I published My Year in Oman in 2005 through a company that went out of business shortly thereafter called Stafford out of British Columbia. Once I paid my thousands in publishing costs, I still had to find a way to print my books. That was when I and everyone else heard about Createspace on Amazon just as I was getting ready to publish Another Year in Oman.

Another Year in Oman: Between Iraq and a Hard Place
Another Year in Oman: Between Iraq and a Hard Place was my first attempt to self-publish on the Createspace platform

That was when the editing nightmares started. I won’t go into all of them, but let me say the result of using an Arabic computer on an English manuscript left all kinds of little artifacts. These kept showing up as I continued to try to get the necessary revisions in my manuscript because they were embedded into the document itself.

Of course, these artifacts became most apparent during the formatting stage of the book, when old artifacts showed up in text, justification of paragraphs, page numbering and other opportune times during your book editing process.

More Reasons To Consider Revising Your Manuscript

Naturally, everyone will not have the experience I had with my first books. As every author who has self-published a book knows, formatting your book is not easy. And I will bet more people than are willing to admit it, made the other mistakes I made with my first books. I had a very good reason for not using the specialized font. I was not aware of the specialized font or how it worked.

Trending
3 Things To Do When A Podcast Guest Cancels

For example, I once went through My Year in Oman while my wife went through Another Year in Oman hitting return and the space bar three times at the beginning of every paragraph too ensure the indentation was correct. Had I known about the specialized fonts, I would have saved myself a whole lot of needless work.

When Is It Wise To Revise Your Self Published Book?

Therefore, it is obvious. As the technology for writing improves or changes your ability to produce a higher quality manuscript, you may want to consider upping your manuscript as well. Especially if you made writing or editing choices based on the lack of familiarity with the software or the editing process.

The Wrong Manuscript

Computer technology is amazing, to be sure. But the ability to produce multiple copies of a document and move those copies to different places can be problematic, too. For example, you move a document to the desktop for editing, then when you grab the file, you don’t pay attention inadvertently upload the unedited version from someplace other than your desktop. Sometimes just forgetting to save changes can cause not only a lot of extra work but frustration and embarrassment as well.

Common Reasons To Revise A Manuscript

When Is It Wise To Revise Your Self Published Book?
  1. Grammar mistakes. One mistake new writers often make is to listen to the advice of the Word program when it comes to grammar. Because it is now a mistake the program doesn’t recognize as a mistake, it might end up in your finished product.
  2. Spelling and Punctuation Errors. Naturally, spelling mistakes or punctuation errors you either made or missed, can end up in a final version of a manuscript. The process of finding them in the final published version can be not only frustrating but embarrassing as well.
  3. Plot or name discrepancies. Without a doubt, the more pages a fiction book has, the more difficult it is to keep track of who is doing what and when.
  4. Updating or correcting facts for non-fiction books. As we all know, facts are changing all the time as new information comes to light. In the past, it was acceptable to attribute the error to the information available at the time. With modern technology, the writer who consciously decides to leave erroneous facts or details in their works is going to be judged harshly by readers and history.

Some Reasons To Avoid A Manuscript Revision

It goes without saying, there are some situations where a manuscript revision is not only not called for, it could be a bad idea.

It Changes The Story

According to the ISBN Agency Bowker, if a book’s revisions change the book enough to motivate the readers to complain, the title could get into trouble with its ISBN and therefore, bookstores.

Another reason you should avoid changes in your manuscript is if you change your viewpoint on a certain topic and you don’t want to appear saying the wrong things in a new political climate. Of course, it would be at least acceptable to offset the idea with a disclaimer that pointed out you had changed your stance or viewpoint.

If you don’t, you run the risk of someone with an older version of your work coming forward to demonstrate your lack of credibility.

Decisions, Decisions and More Decisions

Anyone who has experience editing a book of any length understands the process of editing cannot be done at 50%, 60%, or even 90% concentration. If an editor is not focused completely on the editing process. If he or she does not have the project occupying one hundred percent of focus of the editor’s mind, well, let’s say that is how mistakes appear on manuscripts.

That’s also how mistakes stay on manuscripts.

The Golden Rule of Self-Publishing

If you are a new author, you must learn one fact quickly. Writing the book was the easy part.

Once you are finished with your book and you have published, your job begins.

What most authors, myself included, was the marketing aspect of the book took precedence once the book was published. I soon found out it didn’t matter how good the book was. If no one knew about it, no one would ever know if it was good, or not.

Looking for a return on my time and substantial investment, I became solely occupied with the sales of the book and not the quality of the product.

In other words, once I finished my editing, I published the books in the condition they were in after their third and final editing, regardless of their actual state.

And so, over the course of the years, as my first books become aged in decades and my latest books change to a variety of new topics, I finally every one of my books to the ultimate editing test.

It took me three months of non-stop editing and a million and a half pages. So, I did what will surely be my final revisions of my books, starting in November and finishing in January.

The Best Reason Of All

Finally, let me give my last and most important reasons for revising your books – your readers. The author and reader relationship is like no other in the world. If the author is good, and uses his words effectively, they have the undivided attention of the reader. Your reader’s brain is actively creating a world, situation or device based upon your words. That power is sacred. That relationship is powerful.

If you feel a need to revise for any of the reasons listed above, or for reasons not listed, just remember one thing. You are doing the right thing if you are revising your work to make it a better experience for your reader. Ultimately, there should be no other reason for revising a manuscript.

When Is It Wise To Revise Your Self Published Book?
The reader should be a part of every decision in the authoring process.

The Rainier Paradigm Science, Subduction, Seduction & Sarcasm In One

The Rainier Paradigm
The Rainier Paradigm

Straight From Today’s Headlines

If you know anything about the culture of Seattle and the Pacific Northwest, this book will definitely leave you laughing between the headlines.

The Rainier Paradigm

Although the story is based around the University of Washington in Seattle, the story actually begins, as the author did, in the small town of Sequim. That is where our heroine spends her early years catching crabs in Sequim Bay and falling in love with a young boy named Julian Fry.

Sure enough, fate will deal Melissa Ross a harsh blow before she leaves high school. After a family tragedy, Melissa’s future is completely uncertain. Unable to gain acceptance into respectable schools like Washington State University, Melissa is forced to try her luck at the infamous ‘U Dub.’

Will Melissa’s knowledge of the Olympic Peninsula help her survive? Or will the Rainier Paradigm commence first?

The Good

The characters in the Rainier Paradigm play their roles appropriately well, depending upon your particular point of view. Melissa Ross tries to maintain her values after she finds herself in a situation for which she never asked.

Once in, it is impossible for Melissa to escape the most powerful men in the country and their diabolical plan to activate to Mount Rainier. We can only hope she will be able to remain true to her small-town virtues in the face of doom.

The Bad

The Naval Undercover Tracking Service (N.U.T.S) Building

Although to themselves, they’re the good guys, agent Ronald “Road Rage” Voorhees and his sidekick Tommy Langdon aren’t anything but hired thugs for the Deep State.

When Julian Fry, Melissa’s old flame from Sequim shows up trying to take down her new flame and a plan to activate Mount Rainier, agents “Road Rage” Voorhees and Langdon are going to do everything to stop Julian Fry from slicing and dicing Clayton Powell III.

That’s right, Melissa’s new flame is none other than Clayton Powell III of the banking and political Powells.

Neither he or she know the prodigy rich kid was planted at the University of Washington in order to further his family’s plans of bringing a boom to the Pacific Northwest real estate market, literally.

The Beautiful

Melissa Ross grew up in the wilds of the Olympic Peninsula.

Both the unassuming Melissa and her new beau Clayton Powell are ignorant of the devious mission Clayton’s father, uncle, the Deep State and a mysterious organization called the Minderburgers are about to assign to Clayton Powell III.

The Rainier Paradigm
Melissa went from being a T.A. to Clayton Powell’s T & A almost overnight.

Of course, Clayton too would have a love interest from his youth reappear to help him complete his mission.

Admiral Briton Staley, commanding the naval side of the top secret operation, was a young fighter pilot when she taught Clayton Powell III the meaning of the term ‘joystick.’

The Rainier Paradigm

The Somewhere-In-Between

At the same time Melissa’s love for Clayton is growing, Julian Fry and his group of West Coast Hackers, or “Whackers,” hack into a program they have never seen before.

It shows them the eruption of Mount Rainier with the use of a space based device.

Once the Whackers lock onto the Rainier Paradigm, the two agents from the Naval Undercover Tracking Service lock on to them.

The H.E.R.P.E.

Though a temporary fix until the Department of Anagrams or the officers involved with the program are able to come up with a better one, the program was stuck with H.E.R.P.E. Or the Hyper Electromagnetic Radiation Pulse Extender, The earth based component of the H.E.R.P.E.is housed in a remote area in Alaska accessible only by aircraft.

The new complex, the third of its kind, does one thing, it produces massive amounts of electricity and then transmits it into space.

The Rainier Paradigm
The Rainier Paradigm is hot!

Explosive Ending?

You can bet your bottom dollar on it.

Whether you live in the Northwest or Timbuktu, you are going to find the Rainier Paradigm is a novel that tickles your intellect and your funny bone at the same time. If you want an explosive romance, it doesn’t get any hotter than liquid magma.

Deceptions of the Ages: “Mormons” Freemasons and Extraterrestrials Now More Than Ever

Deceptions of the Ages: "Mormons" Freemasons and Extraterrestrials
Deceptions of the Ages: “Mormons” Freemasons and Extraterrestrials

Not Just For Latter-day Saints Anymore

In the ten years since I published Deceptions of the Ages: “Mormons” Freemasons & Extraterrestrials, there have been a few misconceptions and myths concerning the book I hope to alleviate with some brief insights.

My purpose in doing so is to expand the original purpose of the book. I wish to provide an opportunity for those limited by their own pre-conceived notions about the book’s topics.

For example, some may find the title Deceptions of the Ages: “Mormons” Freemasons and Extraterrestrials‘ a barrier to knowledge.

More about that later…

Encounters USA at ECETI Ranch
Matthew Heines at ECETI Ranch where ET visits regularly. Encounters USA explores the mysteries of Aliens Bigfoot & Dogman.

Inquiring Minds

If they have not done so, and so choose, some readers my even further investigate the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints after reading this book.

I believe that whether or not a person chooses to join the LDS Church is entirely up to them.

Furthermore, I believe that regardless of belief, every person in the world is entitled to the knowledge possessed by the LDS Church.

In simpler terms, every human being has the right to access the tools the Church possesses. These tools are necessary in order to develop a relationship with God and a higher way of thinking.

That was the inspiration for Deceptions of the Ages: “Mormons” Freemasons and Extraterrestrials.

Take it or Leave it

I wanted to write a book about the LDS Church from an objective, take it or leave it point of view.

Some may find that approach to testing knowledge about history, God and our modern society indigestible. If so, move on to a different form of literary pastime.

It is truly unfortunate that those dark forces that keep many good people existing in a form comparable to base animals are more powerful than ever.

The Greatest Extraterrestrial Stories

Fortunately, in the years in which Deceptions of the Ages: “Mormons” Freemasons and Extraterrestrials has been available, things have changed.

To begin with, the UFO Conspiracy or cover up is no more. Each passing month since the first Trump Administration, the US public is introduced to a new military space program. Or, we hear of an incident with an extraterrestrial entity by the US government or media.

No longer do the government and the secret societies that are alleged to be storing ET knowledge have the ability to destroy lives and give out disinformation as in days past.

Best of all, the public interest in the UFO and alien question both in the US and around the world has skyrocketed with YouTube and social media. Sightings and encounters can now be reported in real time.

Mars, Alien Technology in the Antarctic and a Mysterious Secret Space Program
Since the publication of the book, we now have our own Space Force.

“Worlds Without Number”

So, with the acceptance by the majority of the world’s population that UFO’s exist, where do these ET’s fit in with the LDS Church? An organization the book points out, that has always accepted the idea of alien civilizations.

Obviously, our knowledge of other extraterrestrial civilizations will lead to a greater understanding of the Extraterrestrial Being we know as Jesus Christ.

At least as far as our limited understanding could comprehend and explain the concept.

Just as important too, it was my wish that people would understand the effect the knowledge of God, Jesus Christ and the gospel of righteousness and forgiveness has had on cultures who accept Him and His teachings as opposed to those who don’t, both in the past and in the present.

That is the message that some of the Extraterrestrials want to tell us.

That is the message that others Extraterrestrials don’t want us to hear.

If you wish to understand the shocking way Deceptions of the Ages: “Mormons” Freemasons and Extraterrestrials connects Extraterrestrials to the LDS Church and the Freemasons, you won’t be disappointed.

You Can Bank On It

Deceptions of the Ages: “Mormons” Freemasons and Extraterrestrials must cover a myriad of topics in order to create a coherent argument for many of its points. One of those is the takeover of the Freemasons by the Rothschilds. Subsequently, the various nations of the earth have been subverted through the banking and Freemason system.

Never more true has the quote attributed to various Rothschild’s but most likely Nathan, been.

“Permit me to issue and control the money of a nation, and I care not who makes its laws!”

Even more true, and less apocryphal is President Thomas Jefferson’s quote:

“And I sincerely believe with you, that banking establishments are more dangerous than standing armies; & that the principle of spending money to be paid by posterity, under the name of funding, is but swindling futurity on a large scale.”

The Federal Reserve Bank the nation’s patriots fought so hard to prevent is strangling you. Now, there’s no better and easier way to understand how and why they’re doing it.

Destroyer of Worlds – The Achievements and Breakthroughs at CERN.

Of course, the would be no point in making any argument unless it can be defended with hard science.

Deceptions of the Ages: “Mormons” Freemasons and Extraterrestrials was published just two years after CERN went fully operational.

I dedicated time to talking about CERN because of its importance for understanding outside effects upon consciousness and their relationship to physical matter. In other words, religion.

Since then, the Higgs Boson has been found. X particles that form as the result of the interaction of subatomic particles have been the most recent discovery.

Just like God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, the Higgs Boson and X particle exist almost independent of the laws of physics as we know them.

Furthermore, at CERN, and elsewhere, other researchers are closer to proving we do exist within a number of probable realities.

Deceptions of the Ages: “Mormons” Freemasons & Extraterrestrials

Reactions

I think nothing explains the reaction to Deceptions of the Ages: “Mormons” Freemasons and Extraterrestrials like the The Ogden Standard Examiner’s editorial department.

On the day it was published, they assumed it was an anti-LDS book and called it an “another anti-Mormon tome.”

I confess, I had to look up the word tome.

And so, the book has had the opposite effect I hoped it would.

Not What I Expected

Instead of strengthening people’s faith or increasing the general understanding of the world, the book has been shunned by the LDS Church.

Latter-day Saints refuse to read it based upon the title and their inability to understand the use of quotation marks.

In turn, for my efforts, it has been made clear to me that I am not welcome in the Church.

You win some. You lose some.

I Fought The Deep State And I Won Is More Based in Fact Than Clouded in Fiction

I Fought The Deep State & I Won
I Fought The Deep State & I Won On iPad

“I published this story as fiction because I can’t prove it’s all true, but you can’t prove it isn’t.”

Who Fought The Deep State?

If you haven’t heard of me, the author, political candidate, teacher or documentary producer, don’t worry, not many outside of the countries of Oman, Saudi Arabia and Washington State have.

Well, there are the thousands of students I taught during the course of my teaching career and the hundreds of men I knew as a soldier in the United States Army.

As well the hundreds of people I knew during my college years at Washington State University and the University of Alaska in Anchorage, but beyond that, there are few who have ever heard of Matthew Heines.

At least until I decided to run for office.

I Fought the Deep State & I Won

An Introduction

“The stories and personalities that occur are simply devices to tell the story of the relationship between the Deep State and the people involved in my political and civil dismemberment behind the scenes. They are obviously fictional. However, every day, as we listen to the crimes committed in the courts, in State Governments and in Washington DC, we see how true this story really is.”

The true challenge in writing a tale of political intrigue when the subject of the intrigue is you, can be limiting. One limiting factor being the time and ability to investigate just exactly what occurred behind the scenes of a series of human right crimes inflicted upon me by Washington State for political, if not racial purposes.

However, there is ample evidence as the quote says, in the mainstream and investigative media. What happens in the book, happens every day, to everyday Americans, and people around the world.

It’s going to continue to happen more and more and more.

Two Parallels

With half of the story of I Fought The Deep State & I Won occurring behind the blurred veil that exists between our government, the Democratic National Committee, the Intelligence Agencies, the Media and Big Tech, there was a definite challenge I had to overcome.

I had to recreate those scenes that happened in places no one could access, with believable situations and characters having contextually appropriate conversations.

I prepare to file my legal briefs.

To put it simply, I had to make up the players and people who were the puppet masters. They were the ones pulling the strings of political and character assassination through their minions in the King County Prosecutor’s Office.

Mixing Reality With Probability

On the other side is my story, the story that needed no imagination, humor or dramatic license to keep the reader interested. The real story that happened to me and to my wife, is one you will never hear about because the co-conspirators were the mainstream media. Like the media who was silent while the Nazis rounded up the Jews in Germany, KOMO, KING, KIRO & KCPQ in Seattle maintained complete silence in spite of my repeated press releases to them and to the Redmond City Council. They knew and the FBI knew King County was trying to prosecute me for being assaulted.

I Fought The Deep State & I Won

Characters We Can Identify

The story then ties together with characters who may or may not resemble familiar figures in today’s news and Seattle Culture. The glue that exists in order to mix the real with the probable. In other words, the variables we don’t know about occuring between the scenes are those characters who keep the reader interested and fully cognizant that this is happening now to real people.

3 Things To Do When A Podcast Guest Cancels
3 Things To Do When A Podcast Guest Cancels. A few helpful hints.

It was all going great until…

Over a week ago I had a wonderful guest scheduled for Books in Heinessight to discuss how I was going to sell a million books in the next year. What happened is what can happen to any podcast host and in this short and easy to follow blog, I will tell you three things you can do when a podcast guest cancels.

It was all going great until right at the very last minute. Well, actually there were five or six hours until the podcast, but I had to set up my lights and write my script.

1 Million Books in 1 Year Challenge

The fact is, I have been working furiously for months getting ready for the 1 Million Books in 1 Year Challenge. I have been editing, reformatting and republishing six books across Amazon, KOBO, iTunes and soon Heinessight Books will be on Ingram Spark.

The Rainier Paradigm is going to erupt on the sales charts this year

In order to increase my Heinessight brand awareness, I started designing my own line of Heinessight apparel. I have designs ranging from political to religious, and all of them unique designs thought up and designed by me and a lot of help from Canva.

In order pre-kick off the event, I needed to invite a guest on Books in Heinessight who could:

Give me and my listeners and viewers advice on how to sell a million books.

Of course, I would be asking them to cite their experiences. I want my listeners to glean as much information about how to turn their works into sales as possible. I needed someone who either helped to get books to market, or someone who had been through the process.

My First Mistake

I think my first mistake was to go through a spam email I get occasionally, if daily qualifies as occasionally. Since it says podcasts guests in the subject line, I thought that it was a gift from heaven or a sign of destiny, depending upon your disposition.

I scrolled through until I found what I was looking for, an author and comedian who did public performances. Of course it didn’t hurt much that she was attractive and would make a nice thumbnail for my podcast and YouTube.

I sent off an inquiry immediately, hoping to hear a response in few days. You can guess my surprise when I had a response within a few minutes. I was probably so surprised that I didn’t see the warning signs, but in Heinessight, they were there.

“Who is this? How did you get my name?” was the response.

I texted her back and explained I wanted her to be a guest on my podcast. “Books in Heinessight to talk about how to sell 1 Million Books in 1 Year.“

We then went back and forth for a few minutes when I finally suggested we speak on the phone.

It Was Going Great Until…

We spoke for almost twenty minutes and everything seemed to be coming up clover for Books in Heinessight. She was hilarious. She was smart and she had a great voice.

I explained to her that I was just a small podcast trying to get back on its feet after a year’s absence. There had been a political campaign during the summer. There was also another podcast I had started about aliens, Bigfoot and Dogman called Encounters USA.

Encounters USA really piqued her interest. She even offered to have me on her podcast with her and her son in the future. Things were going swimmingly.

3 Things To Do When A Podcast Guest Cancels

With a guest like her starting off the 1 Million Books in 1 Year Challenge, what could go wrong?

We booked a date for Friday evening, 7 p.m. Central Time.

I then had a chance to go over her website and see what kind of comedian she was and what kind of books she wrote. Let’s just say, I was impressed. She was hilarious.  It was going to be a great podcast and with her good looks, I was bound to bring on the viewers and subscribers.

It really was exciting. An author, a comedian and someone who shared my penchant for dry wit and puns.

Friday morning, day of podcast, I received the text message no podcaster wants to get.

3 Things To Do When A Podcast Guest Cancels
3 Things To Do When A Podcast Guest Cancels

What time is the podcast?

The reason no podcaster wants to hear that question is – it leaves it open for the guest to actually know the time of the event that is going to keep them from doing your podcast.

When I repeated the time by text, she explained there was a family issue that had to be dealt with and could we do it an hour later.

And so it went on and on through trying to reschedule for later and then the next day. Each attempt leading more and more to me getting the Jeffrey Dahmer treatment. In other words, every time I proposed an alternative, I got the cold shoulder.

I finally gave in and suggested she try contacting me in April and I would see if I had any openings then.

And so we come to the point of what are three things we can do when the podcast guest cancels.

3 Things To Do When A Podcast Guest Cancels

Option 1

Don’t Get Mad – Get Even

A lot goes into making a podcast. Just the prep work involved includes writing scripts, doing promotions on social media and other outlets. The promotions themselves involve hours of designing thumbnails for podcast and videos that will attract attention and excite interest in the podcast.

When someone cancels it’s like they just stole hours of your life you will never see again.

Some podcast hosts recommend sure and swift retaliation for this kind of impromptu absence from their podcast. A general consensus of podcast hosts provides a list of common retaliations meted out to guests for cancelling at the last minute.

“You’ll never work in this town again!” A classic retaliation used by media moguls to force Hollywood Stars to put out or get up, or was that put up or get in? Either way, the sheer number of podcasts and the volunteer status of guests limit its effectiveness.

Show them you don’t horse around

Dead horse head in bed – although still effective, the continued use of it and domestic servants since the The Godfather came out in the 1970’s has created a desensitizing effect and is more often taken as a practical joke than a form of Umberto.

Unwanted magazine subscriptions – A truant podcast guest will definitely think twice about cancelling on your podcast when they find themselves explaining the latest edition of Gay Asian Porn Magazine out of Hung Lo China in the mailbox.

Option 2

Turn the Other Cheek

Around holiday time, there is no better time to just forgive and forget. Your podcast guest really may have had an issue and not just found your little podcast not worth the return on their time or investment, as you and everyone who has listened to your podcast might be inclined to think.

Option 3

Somewhere in Between

Although I myself subscribe to Jesus’ admonition to forgive others their trespasses so that Jesus will forgive mine, it’s my first inclination to always believe the word of any guest who fails to keep a podcast appointment. Since there has only been one, my faith has not really been tested. Still, I cannot resist the temptation to resort to Option 1, while keeping the spirit of Option 2 alive.

So, I have left open the option of my cancelled guest returning in April.

April 1, that is.

The Rainier Paradigm Hardcover

Not suspecting that she may have been sent to the country for the specific purpose of infiltrating the Federal Investigation Bureau, the F.I.B. offered her U.S. citizenship if she would work for them. When she waffled, they added visas for her family, money, scholarships, even a Dingleberry’s hamburger franchise on Aurora Avenue in Lynnwood before she finally agreed.
